Flying Lanterns

Introduction:

A neath smuggler of surface goods. Thomas is a man whose been noted to have several talents in academics and business, but lacks a lot of the tact for actual emotional connection.

History:

Early Childhood
Thomas had been born into a settlement in London with his parents and older brother. He'd been raised to take advantage of a more academic life, his parents getting favors with the university to allow him to take reading classes at the age of six. Thomas quickly became bored with the efforts his parents gave him, and required more and more classes to keep himself busy. When he turned eight he'd been informed by someone at the university that his parents had been murdered, along with his older brother, the reason unknown.

Thomas was sent to the Orphanage and Church run mainly by Catherine and a rotating staff of priests and vicars. Thomas was not allowed to continue his schooling on the basis that the church simply did not have the funds.

Youth
As a young man Thomas had caused a lot of trouble for the church, starting fights or arguments with the other children and generally acting out. Thomas spent most of this time being angry with the church, and most especially with Catherine, who didn't approve of his actions or personal choices.

Thomas met Able and they quickly became close, mainly due to how Able did not go out of his way to tease or make fun of Thomas. Thomas was amused by how often he cried and how easy he was to get to do things he couldn't do himself. Thomas developed a crush on Able around age 13, which went by unnoticed for a very long time. Thomas instead focused on other boys, accepting that Able simply wasn't the same as him. This however brought a lot of conflict into their later life, Thomas growing short with Able due to these latent feelings.

Thomas and Able were briefly involved with Urchins for about a year before Thomas decided to run his own operation.

The Business
Thomas Jones is a name not a lot of people get to know personally, most know him simply by his stamp or wood burning on crates that he ships out. A crow with a branch of Holly in its mouth[PLACEHOLDER FOR IMAGE]. Thomas had discovered there was a market for surface goods, and decided to invest in it with what little he had,and paid off a surface dweller to collect items for him. He had to quickly learn how to get around customs, which mainly involved bribing the tax collector.

Thomas now had the means to get goods, but he needed a way to move the product. Thomas learned that he could hire a set of people to do so, while they get a percentage of whatever they sell. He could also give them a flat rate for delivery costs, making it more likely that they would still try to move product. Thomas had to learn very fast however that some would take the flat rate, and the product and leave, so he also had to hire someone to keep them in line.

Thomas met Virgil on a chance encounter, the devil wanting to procure a whole ship of fruit and wine surface goods, and Thomas at the time, had only one ship. Thomas however delivered(Mainly due to his accidental acceptance of a contract) with some fair amount of difficulty, gaining The Deacon's interest. The Deacon had proven to be very integral for keeping his other client's in order, and not merely running off in fear(or respect) of Virgil. Thomas keeps Virgil as happy as he can, or at least sated with his services.

Relationships:

Thomas does everything he can to keep most people away from himself emotionally as he possibly can, often going out of his way to purposefully sabotage relations with people.
Able
One of his closest friends, even after all the time they've been around each other. Able and Thomas knew each other since childhood, though Thomas's motives were mainly protection. This changed as he got older and started finding that particular strength and genuine nature of Able's endearing. Thomas had(poorly) attempted to get closer to Able by asking him if he liked any boys. Able completely misunderstood this, and said that he liked Thomas, because they were best friends. Thomas accepted that as a defeat.

Regardless Thomas values Able as a close friend and ally.
Pearl
Pearl is a very close friend of Thomas's, becoming rather quick friends with how genuinely she had acted towards his small kindness. They have regular meets for tea and snacks, and spend a lot of time attempting to understand each other.
The Bandaged
A recent client of his, typically engaging in his other services along with providing him with a new ship for his surface smuggling ring. Their interactions are mainly contentious, and do not typically get along in more polite company.
Virgil
A long time client, who he supplies surface goods to. Virgil is often by to purchase goods to use to gain access to souls, or otherwise smooth along interactions with others. He has been noted to be the main supplier of The Bandaged, who hadn't been aware of Thomas for quite some time.

Catherine
Catherine had never been very keen on Thomas, but still provided him with food and shelter when he was a child. She didn't hide her disdain for his interests in other boys very well, creating a deep hatred for her in Thomas.

Personality:

Thomas is a fairly cold individual, not keen on dealing with other people unless there is some gain involved. This, however isn't the case when dealing with actual friends, flipping to a more charitable person if he actually likes them. Thomas is noted to be fairly promiscuous, and will not hide his interests in these endeavors regardless of the situation. He will, however, disregard any advances towards him over his work, putting priority in his business. Thomas has been shown to be a fairly successful smuggler and businessman, though he's had several bad breaks, and ship losses.
